Florida Authors

Well I do a lot of reading in addition to listening to Jimmy Buffett music. I have read his three books Where Is Joe Merchant, Tales from Margaritaville, and A Pirate Looks at Fifty. I highly recommend all Parrotheads read them and if I ever get the first two back from my buddy Brian I will read them again. My job working night time security at Pax River for the V-22 gave me plenty of time for reading and I have come across other authors from South Florida that are really good.

Incommunicado makes a reference to John Macdonald so I guess that's where I'll start. He's been writing Travis McGee novels since the early sixties. Mr. Macdonald is no longer with us but his books are; and I highly recommend them. I have read:

The Deep Blue Good-by
The Girl in the Plain Brown Wrapper
Bright Orange for the Shroud
Nightmare in Pink
The Quick Red Fox
One Fearful Yellow Eve
Darker Than Amber
One Fearful Yellow Eye
Pale Gray for Guilt
The Girl in the Plain Brown Wrapper
Dress Her in Indigo
The Long Lavender Look
A Tan and Sandy Silence
The Scarlet Ruse
The Turquoise Lament
The Dreadful Lemon Sky
The Empty Copper Sea

Another fantastic author is Carl Hiassen and he has a knack for creating unbelievable characters and situations that you just might find believable. We live in a strange world. The first book listed below, created everyones favorite environmental terrorist Skip Wiley . I have read:

Tourist Season
Skin Tight
Stormy Weather
Double Whammy
Lucky You
Native Tongue
Strip tease
Basket Case
Sick Puppy
The third author that makes South Florida seem like the coolest place on Earth is Randy Wayne White. He also writes for Mens Health magazine, which I had been reading for years when I happened to come across one of his books. If you have time, read them all; if not try a few, you wont be disappointed. I have read all of The Doc Ford Novels. So far they are:

Sanibel Flats
The Heat Islands
The Man Who Invented Florida
Captiva
North of Havana
The Mangrove Coast
Ten Thousand Islands
Shark River
Twelve Mile Limit
Everglades

...and in my hands right now is Tampa Burn
